Dokploy vs Coolify: Which Should You Actually Pick

23 Oct 2025

Both run your apps on your own server with git-push deploys and automatic SSL. They overlap heavily. Here is where they actually differ.

The short answer

Either will serve a small team well. Neither is a bad choice.

Setup

Both install with a single curl command on a fresh Ubuntu box. Coolify wants 2GB RAM minimum and is happier with 4. Dokploy runs comfortably on 2GB.

Coolify’s installer does more up front — it sets up its own database, Redis, and a Traefik or Caddy proxy. Dokploy leans on Docker Swarm and Traefik with less moving furniture.

Multi-server

This is the clearest difference.

Dokploy uses Docker Swarm natively. Adding a second server is joining it to the swarm and scheduling services on it. Scaling a service to three replicas is a number in a text box.

Coolify manages multiple servers too, but treats each as a separate deployment target rather than one cluster. You deploy to server B; you do not spread a service across A and B.

If you expect to outgrow one box, Dokploy’s model is less work.

Templates

Coolify wins here, not close. It ships one-click installs for well over a hundred services — Plausible, Ghost, Supabase, Umami, Appwrite, Minio, and a long tail of self-hosted tools.

Dokploy has templates too, and the list keeps growing, but it is smaller.

If your plan is “run twelve self-hosted tools on one server”, Coolify saves you real time.

Database management

Both give you managed Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis containers with backups to S3.

Coolify’s backup UI is more mature. Dokploy’s is simpler and does the job. Neither replaces a managed database for something critical.

The UI

Subjective, but worth saying: Dokploy’s interface is noticeably tidier. Fewer screens, clearer hierarchy, less hunting. Coolify has more features and the density shows.

If you are handing the panel to a non-infrastructure person, Dokploy is easier to explain.

Community and longevity

Coolify has roughly four times the GitHub stars and a much larger Discord. More people have hit your problem before you.

Dokploy is younger with a smaller community, but active development and a responsive maintainer.

For a tool you will run for years, community size is a real factor. Weigh it.

What to do

Spin up a $6 VPS and install one. Deploy a real app to it. Then destroy it and try the other. Two hours of actual use will tell you more than any comparison table, including this one.

Most people who try both keep the first one that deployed their app without a fight.
